Birth: Apr. 10, 1837 Death: Jun. 1, 1909 I don't know a great deal about great grandmother Caroline. What I think I know is backed up only by family legend so that's really about all I can pass on here. One thing known for fact is that Caroline was a really good artist and could sketch any likeness that she saw exactly as she saw it. Cousin Ruth Crowder Clark tells of a picture that Caroline had drawn for Aunt Liza (Conway) Crowder that Aunt Liza gave to Ruth's mother, Velia Belle. The problem is that no one knows who got the picture when Velia died and so I have never seen any of Caroline's art. Cousin Ruth says it was magnificent though. According to all family history, Caroline never had art lessons. The relationship between Caroline and 'Old Pat' is only hinted at by the family. Some of it is more supposition than real knowledge. What is known for sure is that great grandfather was on the farm and with the family in 1860 per the 1860 census but, after that, the war started and everything changed. Per family legend though, even then, the marriage was either stormy or with frequent scattered showers. Apparently Caroline held her own and didn't take a lot of crap. When the war started and great grandfather went off with Joe Wheeler in 1861 and on through to about the end of the war with Forrest, it is rumored in the family that 'Old Pat' would come home just long enough to "get Caroline pregnant" and then he was gone again. This doesn't seem likely as Aunt Liza was born in June of 1861 and no other children were born until Uncle 'P' came along in October of 1865 indicating that, unless there were three or four stillbirths, great grandfather probably didn't come home for any serious purposes until about March 1865 unless Uncle 'P' was premature which could indicate that he didn't even come home until after the surrender in Gainesville in May of 1865. I have no information, however, that would lead me to believe that Uncle 'P' was born prematurely (simply an hypothesis). Per family legend, Caroline, after the war, was pretty much left alone to run the farm by herself with the children as 'Old Pat' continued on west, outrunning Federal Warrants, with Billy Ham and Clay Allison and finally wound up in Mexico where he was a professional gambler for an unknown period of time. Caroline grew weary of this and either she divorced great grandfather or he divorced her or neither one of them bothered with any legal divorce. I have never been able to find any document stating that either they, or the state, actually called it quits but, it is known fact that in 1872, Old Pat was in Limestone County, AL where he remarried Alabama Stinnett and, in 1881, Caroline remarried to Zachariah Belew. Caroline was quite self reliant as she pretty much raised her family alone. It can certainly be said that she had sufficient strength and fortitude to handle most anything that came her way.
