James K. Wells enlisted from Owen County, Indiana on the 20th day of August, 1861, and was mustered into the United States service on the 5th day of September, 1861, as a Sergeant of Company “B”, Thirty-first Regiment of Indiana Volunteer Infantry by Lieutenant Colonel T. J. Wood, USA under Captain Isaac N. Winans and Colonel Charles Cruft to serve three years or during the war. The regiment was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division, Fourth Corps, Army of the Cumberland and participated in the following engagements: Fort Donelson, Tennessee, February 15, 1862 Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6th and 7th, 1862 Siege of Corinth, Missippi, May 20th to 30th, 1862 Chickamauga, Georgia, September 19th and 20th, 1863 Rocky face Ridge, Georgia, May 11th, 1864 Resaca, Georgia, May 15th, 1864 Skirmish at Casserville, Georgia, May 19th-20th, 1864 Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, June 27th, 1864 Marietta, Georgia, July 4th, 1864 Peach Tree Creek, George, July 20th, 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia, July 28th, 1864 Battle to the Right of Atlanta, Georgia, August 26, 1864 Jonesborough, Georgia, September 1st, 1864 Lovejoy Station, Georgia, September 2nd, 1864 Said James K. Wells was promoted as follows: Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant for Company “B” Thirty-first Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry on the 13th day of March, 1863. To date and take effect the 8th day of January, 1863. Was mustered on his Commission June the 1st, 1863 from the 14th day of March, 1863. After the battle at Shiloh he was appointed to carry the colors of the regiment. (End page 156) He was color bearer for the regiment until after the battle of Perryville, Kentucky, October the 8th, 1862. Being unable for active field duty on account of sickness and injury received on that campaign. He was left at Danville, Kentucky by the order of General Smith Commander of the Division, where he remained until the 30th day of November, 1862. Admitted in the hospital at Nashville, Tennessee the 26th day of December, 1862, where he remained by order of General Rosecrans, until the 15th day of March, 1863. Having been engaged as commissary Sergeant for hospitals. Having received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant he returned to his regiment at Cripple Creek, Tennessee which was about March 19th, 1863, and participated on the Tullahoma campaign. On or about the 25th day of April, 1864, by order of Lieutenant Colonel Francis L. Neff, Commanding 31st Regt Ind Vol. Inf. He was appointed Commander of a Company of prisoners of the First Brigade, First Division Fourth Army Corps, at Oolterva, Tennessee. Colonel I. M. Kirby in command of the First Brigade in his report of the part taken by his brigade on the Atlanta campaign from the 3rd day of May to the 8th day of September, says: “I must bear testimony of the invaluable and rendered by the prisoner detachments of this brigade.
