Birth: unknown, Germany Death: unknown Ohio, USA Aaron was born after 1720 in Germany, he died in the Olive Green settlement, Washington Co., OH Territory. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Following from 50+ year Delong researcher, the late John D. Baldwin III: AARON (4) Aaron Delong Sr. was born no doubt in Germany, probably in the 1720s. Aaron Jr. was known to his neighbors as a Pennsylvania Dutchman (Deutsch = German) and son Solomon's son reported a German father. A 1720s date is suggested by Solomon being adult by 1773, by Aaron himself being considered old and feeble in 1794. 1772 - migrated to Pa. by this year, perhaps as early as 1768 if the adult John of Redstone was his son John. Whatever portion of son Solomon's traditional migration pattern is correct for Solomon is likely correct for the rest of the family also. Solomon supposedly removed from France (often claimed, never proven for other Delongs also; most likely from Germany) via Philadelphia to (West) Va., (the border of Washington Co., PA and the West Va. panhandle not being well established at the time). 1772 - Settled Buffalo Creek, Washington Co., PA then claimed by VA. 1777 - Took Oath of Allegiance Ohio Co. (W) VA Sept 24. 1780 - he applied for an ear-mark for identifying his livestock. "on the motion of Aron(sic) Delong, ordered that his mark a Cropp off the Right Ear and an Under Slope in the Left Ear be recorded" (MINUTE BOOK OF VIRGINIA COURT FOR OHIO COUNTY, Court held at Black's Cabin, now West Liberty W. VA 1777-1780, p. 72) Hawkins vs Wheat, Aron Delong summoned for jury duty (ibid 73) Caldwell vs Martin for slander, "...whereupon Aaron Delong Sr (et al) do say that they find the plaintiff guilty of false swearing and Judgement on Motion, August 1780 (ibid p. 75) (from Chalkley's AUGUSTA CO) 1781 - land in Buffalo Creek surveyed Jan 18, the 1772 settlement date being recorded in this survey. 1781 - Hopewell Twp., Wash. Co. (,OH) tax list 1 horse, 3 cattle (PA ARCHIVES III 22:741) Value £16. 1783 - Aaron Delong (Sr or Jr?) was charged for "one bowl". presumably punch or toddy. (Account Book of Charles Wells, a tavernkeeper, shoemaker and cattle dealer "at what became known as Wellsburg, later Buffalo, in the W. Va. panhandle." There is confusion in this description -- Wellsburg is today in W. Va a few miles West of the Pa-Va line while Buffalo is a few miles East in Pa. Aaron's land was in between, abutted the line on the Pa side. 1783 - Hopewell Twp. tax list (Pa Archives) 1785 - Aaron Sr., Aaron Jr. and Solomon sold Wash. Co. land Feb 7. 1786 - a survey map of Independence Twp. Wash. Co. shows that 137 acres of land was surveyed July 9, having been acquired on a Virginia certificate. I suspect this may be the same land listed above as Buffalo Creek 1772 and 1781, and Hopewell Twp. in three tax lists 1781-1793. Called "Rich Hill", patented 1800 to Abram. C..... 1793 - tax list of Hopewell Twp., Washington Co., OH. 1794 - Sold Wash. Co. land Feb. 22. I assume this is the land surveyed 1786 as above. 1794 - Aaron Jr. had before now settled at the Olive Green Settlement in Washington Co. Ohio. "In the fall of 1794, Delong the Dutchman (i.e. Deutsch man = German) of our garrison went to Western Pa. and brought with him his father who was very old and feeble and had some property. He said on his return that he would make out well by the trip if his father died in any reasonable time." (OHIO ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY PUBLICATIONS XXII:132). 179_ - He was not as feeble as inferred by the above account. Both he and Aaron Jr. were granted 100-acre Donation Tracts at Olive Green for bearing a gun. CHILDREN OF AARON SR. (wife's name unknown) 4-1 AARON JR. b. prob. By 1750, md. Mary _____. 4-2 JOHN b. perhaps 1740s. Took Oath of Allegiance Ohio Co. (WVa.) Oct 10, 1777, the same day as Solomon. Aaron Jr. Was a squatter in 1785 down the Ohio River near what would become Marietta, and his house was among those burned by federal troops. The house was along the shore below Cross Creek (Steubenville) John Delong also appears in the index but is not included among the names actually published (Federal Land Series Vol. 1). A John Del(i)ng is indexed in Washington Co., PA, 1790. I do not know whether he might have been the John Delong who was among the 1768 inhabitants near Redstone, Washington Co. (Croghan's Journal p. 181; Your Family Tree I:2:9). A fuller acct. is in D. Kauffman Early Hist. Of Western Pa. 41. I will quote the full residents' list as it may help someone properly identify this John through later associations "In 1765-6, settlements were made at Redstone and Turkeyfoot. Among the settlers at Redstone were Wiseman, Prisser, Linn, Colvin, Vervalson, Tygart, Brown, Rodgers, Swartz, McClean, Martin, Hatton, Waller, Donter, Colburn, Delong, Young, Down, Gudgeon, Sute, Crawford, Perers, Hooterr, Conn, Cook, M'Coy, Provence and others". "They were notified to move on because of complaints by the Indians in 1768. Some went to Berkeley Co. (W) Va., some to Fayette Co., Va." I do not know whether Redstone, Wash. Co. was the same as Fort Redstone which is today's Brownsville, Fayette Co. If so, it is well to the East of Aaron's land abutting WVa., and any John in the Eastern location would likely not be the man of the Panhandle area who took the Oath in 1777. A John served in the 13th Va. Regt. In Rev. War. I do not know from what area this unit was drawn. Perhaps it was this John, perhaps Johannes (5-1-3-1), perhaps another. 4-3 SOLOMON b. ca 1750-55, md. Ann LeMasters. 4-4 FRANCIS b. 1750s? Took Oath of Allegiance Ohio Co. (W) Va. Oct 9, 1777, the day before Solomon and John. Could he have followed Aaron Jr. To Marietta in 1794, then continued immediately further down- river? The name of Francis Delong is included on a list of persons for whom letters were being held in the Cincinnati Postoffice as published in the "Centinel of the Northwest Territory" Vol. II, p. 95, Sept. 12, 1795 and again Vol. III, p. 112, Jan 9, 1796. 4-5 SAMUEL perhaps. Federal Land Series Vol. 1, p. 149 shows that Samuel Delong's house at Wheeling was destroyed by federal troops. The same document shows that Solomon (4-3)'s house four miles from Norristown was destroyed that same date Apr 27, 1786. Tradition places Solomon "near the Blockhouse". Is this Wheeling Blockhouse? Was Samuel of Wheeling, otherwise unknown, either a duplicate or a second entry for Solomon?
