Elijah MAYFIELD

Elijah Mayfield was born June 10th, 1762 in Amherst Co, VA, a son of James Mayfield and his first wife (name unknown). His father married 2ndly to Ellender, widow of John Conner. The family lived at Mayfield Station near what is now Brentwood, TN. Elijah's father James was killed near there at Eaton's Station by Indians in April 1780. Elijah served in the American Revolution. He was in the Virginia Military and went with George Rogers Clark to Illinois Territory and served one year. He was in the artillery. After this he went to Eatons Station where his family resided. He remained there one year after which he was taken prisoner in 1780 and confined about two and 1/2 years by the Indians and British. He eventually escaped, and went to Long Island of the Holston River. He married there and remained at Long Island for about 18 months. In 1785, he moved to South Carolina where he remained for 17 years. In 1801-1802, he moved to Jefferson Co, Kentucky. After nearly two decades there, he moved, about 1819, to Hickman Co, Tennessee, where he resided until his death. His wife was Elizabeth (maybe Anderson?),supposed to be of mixed race and said to be a granddaughter of Hester Anderson, a freed slave and her common-law husband, who was a slave in Norfolk Co, VA. They had at least 11 children and lived in Pendleton District, SC for several years before moving to Hickman Co, TN by 1820. Here, Elijah applied for and received a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War. He died at the age of 81 on September 5th, 1843.
