There's a good chance if the doorbell rings early in the morning or late at night, that Uggie, Kottman's multi-colored and doorbell-ringing cat will be waiting on the porch. The doorbell is Uggie's way of letting Kottman, a Columbia township farmer, know she's hungry. The cat's doorbell-ringing adventures began in January. Kottman was entertaining friends one night and the doorbell rang about 9:30 p.m. When Kottman answered the door his two cats, Uggie and a yellow cat that's been missing for the past four weeks, were sitting on the porch. Thirty minutes later the doorbell rang and once again Kottman found two cats on his porch. Although the yellow cat rang the bell more consistently, Uggie has carried on the tradition and the rest is history. Uggie, a three-year old mother of two, attains her goal by climbing a screen door and reaching over approximately three inches to the right to a lighted doorbell. Kottman said he thought the light attracted Uggie, named because she "so many different colors and so ugly." to the doorbell. Although Uggie isn't consistent in her ringing, Kottman knows that anytime the doorbell rings before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. there's a good chance a hungry cat awaits him on the porch.
