PAUL KOVERMAN, Ballet Master/Choreographer

Mr. Koverman is well known to San Diego audiences as a Principal Danseur and a choreographer. His formal dance training began at the Dayton Ballet School under Josephine Schwartz, Jon Rodriguez and Bess Saylor after which he received a scholarship to the School of American Ballet in New York. In addition to this primary training, Mr. Koverman's technique was shaped by many individuals including Robert Rodham, Marius Zirra, David Howard and Melissa Hayden. He has performed with the Pennsylvania Ballet, California Ballet, San Antonio Ballet and many others. He originally appeared with the California Ballet Company from 1978-1984 in many principal roles including Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Snow King and Cavalier in The Nutcracker, Concerto Barocco, Holberg Suite and was honored for best performance in The Choice.

An experienced teacher, Mr. Koverman was Artistic Director of the Phoenix School of Ballet from 1985-1991. While in Russia studying the Soviet training methods, he was invited to stage his modern work Separation on a newly formed company drawn from dancers of the Bolshoi and Leningrad Companies. His choreography has been seen locally on the California Ballet Company and Stage 7. His Untitled with music by Aulis Sallinen was performed by the CBC in 1993 and Separation in 1994. Without Title was created in 1994 and was also staged by request in Provo, Utah. Additional works for the CBC are Quantic Class (1996), Nuns and Angels (1997), and Clowns (2000). His work, Elegy, was premiered for the 30th Anniversary Gala performance in the spring of 1998, performed live to the music of Yoav Talmi. His most recent works are Symphonic Dances (2001), Breathless (2001), and In Memory of ?United We Stand (2001). Mr. Koverman has served on the faculty for San Diego State University, and is currenty on the faculty for the California Ballet Schoo, in addition to being the Ballet Master/Resident Choreographer for the Company .
