Dietrich Heinrich "Henry" Meyer was born at Eitzendorf, near Hoya, Germany, on July 12, 1829. He was the son of Johann Heinrich Meyer and AnnaMargarete Volkmann.
He lived with his parents until the family moved to Wechold where Johann Meyer became a land owner. Henry received his education under the tutelage of Karl Phillip Spitta, a well-known pastor.
In 1850, Henry enlisted in the Hanoverian Army where he served for fouryears. Upon returning home, he married Sophie Katharine Rebecca Henneike on September 07, 1854. He became engaged in the wooden shoe-making business.
Henry and his wife, Sophie, and their six children immigrated to the United States in March 1868. They traveled from New York by rail along the Great Lake region where Henry began farming in Cook County, Ill.
Two more children were born to their family in 1869 and 1871.
Eary in 1873, Henry and Sophie worked their way across the prairie andswamplands of northeastern Illinois, to Iroquois County near Crescent City, Ill. Henry continued in farming, and continued to purchase more land.
In 1873 and 1875, two more children were born to Henry and Sophie.
After 12 years in residence in the United States, Henry Meyer was givenhis final certification of naturalization. Shortly after Oklahoma became a state in 1907, four of Henry and Sophie's children and their families left their homeland in Illinois for more and better opportunities in the West, settling on farms near Okarche.
Henry died Feb. 14, 1908, at the age of 78, and Sophie died June 18, 1919, at the age of 86. Both are buried in St. Peter's Lutheran Cedmeterysouth of Crescent City, Ill.
Their 10 children were: Marguerite Meyer, who married Henry Harries; Dietrich Meyer, who married Anna Thalman and Johanna Brutlag; Elizabeth Meyer, who married Diedrich Ahlden and John Voight; Johann Meyer, who married Elizabeth Hopmann; and Heinrich Meyer, who married Maria Zum Mallen.
And, Katherina Meyer, who married Henry ZumMallen; Maria Meyer, who married Dietrich Zum Mallen; Dorathea Meyer, who married John Bohlmann; Friederich Meyer, who married Sophia Schroeder; and August Meyer, who married Margaretha Zum Mallen.
Heinrich, Maria, Dorathea and Friederich were the first four Meyer children to come to Okarche. There are many Meyer descendants in this community.
