SPENCER, Iowa -- Richard "Dick" Fiddelke, 64, of Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Spencer and Primghar, Iowa, was called to his heavenly home Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at the University of Nebraska Hospital in Omaha. His death came peacefully with his family at his side. His battle, now over, from first being diagnosed with cancer in 1999.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Center Street Baptist church in Marshalltown, with the Rev. Bobby Shomo officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, State Center, Iowa. Visitation with the family presentwill be 6 to 9 p.m. today at Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown.
Born Nov. 6, 1939, at his family home near Primghar, in Liberty Township, O'Brien County, he was the only son of Herbert and Luella Sophia (Hoppe) Fiddelke. He received his education there until age 10, when the family moved to Spencer. He graduated from Spencer High School with theclass of 1959. He was an honored member of the Future Farmers of America, receiving the Iowa and American Star Farmer Award. He also receivedhis education at Iowa State University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in animal science in 1969, and was working on his master's degree.
On June 3, 1961, he was united in marriage to Lola Mincer in Spencer. They made their home in many different communities, including Oakland, Iowa, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Peoria, Ill., Wilson, N.C., Spencer, Ames, Washington, Atlantic, West Des Moines, Ralston, Terrill, Griswold and Manning, Iowa. They most recently moved to Marshalltown in 2000.
He was a hardworking gentleman whose expertise was in agriculture, working in that field in the many communities they called home, including the feed division of Cargill, Voc-Ag teaching and Cooperative management. Most recently in West Des Moines, he worked for senior housing, MercyHospital in environmental services and Dahl's Food Store on Fleur Drive. In Marshalltown, he was employed with Ron Fisher Furniture. Any of the places they called home, he was a faithful member of the Baptist church and has now found Center Street Baptist as his church family.
He will be fondly remembered as a loving family man who had a great sense of humor, was always uplifting even in illness. He dearly enjoyed agriculture and John Deere tractors, fixing things and baking banana bread and muffins. He was a very faithful and patient man.
Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife of 42 years, Lola; five beloved daughters and their families, Monica Jessen and her children, James, Jeffrey, Jennifer and Josie, of West Des Moines, Michelle Salmon andher husband, Eric and their children, Caitlin, Benjamin and Allison, ofDes Moines, Melody Berns and her companion, Michael White and children, Jessica, Emily and Cody, of State Center, Iowa, Melanie Fiscus and her husband, Derek and their child, Jasper, of Marshalltown, and MilletteShores and her husband, Michael and their child, Claire Gregory of DesMoines; and a host of friends.
