The funeral of Dick Rope Sr., was held at the North Lutheran church Thursday and was largely attended. The pall bearers were mostly from Yorktown where Mr. Rope made his home, all men being from the Yorktown St. Paul's church. The eight men carrying the casket were John and Henry Huseman, J. H. Herzberg, Will Buesing, Louis Goecker, Henry Harms, AlbertWellhausen and Henry Nothwehr.
Mr. Rope passed away at the home of his son John. According to the physician the body laid twelve hours after death before it was discovered that he had passed away. The daughter in law had looked in and thought he was asleep. This was about eight o'clock. She went again at ten and finding that he had apparently not moved she became alarmed and found that he had passed away. He had eaten a hearty supper the night before and had joked as was his habit.
John Dietrich Rope was born in Germany on Nov. 14, 1843 and when five days old he was baptized in the Lutheran Church. When 14 years old he emigratted to the United States. It was the time of great unrest with thecountry heading toward war. He soon took up arms for the counrty of his adoption enlisted at the age of 18 and served under the flag from 1862 to 1865, when he received his honorable discharge. What three years of service means in those days only the old veterans can tell. He servedin the first division, 20th Art. Corp. (82nd Illinois Infantry) Afterhis discharge he farmed one year alone then he married Miss Margaret Ochmann which marriage was blessed with seven children of which three areliving. In 1913 his wife died. These last years of his life were lonesome years for him and particularly toward the end he failed fast. Heartfailure was the cause of his death. He was 77 years, 6 months and 11 days old.
