Debra Ann Bettermann, 65, of Crescent City passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. She was born May 24,1952 in Watseka, the daughter of Robert and Valera Meyer Bohlmann andshe was preceded in death by her father.

She married David A. Bettermann on April 18, 1980 in Crescent City andhe survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Delaney (Jason) Kolberg of Davenport, Iowa; her mother, Valera Bohlmann of Crescent City; one sister, Victoria (Gerald) Hendricks of Crescent City; two brothers, Brian(Sandie) Bohlmann of Watseka and Scott (Robin) Bohlmann of Woodland; her mother-in-law, Dorothy Bettermann of Danforth; and several nieces and nephews.

Debra loved being a 3rd grade teacher and throughout her 40 years of teaching always found different ways to engage her students. She had manytraditions including the Crescent City historical unit, the bird unitwhere students learned to identify different types of birds, playing around the world, the farm unit, 3rd grade memory books where she wrote notes back and forth with you throughout the year, the Native American unit she taught with Mrs. Dorsey, and of course teaching multiplicationfacts which ended in a speed test to see who would get their name at the top of the rocket. Thirteen was her favorite number and she would celebrate every Friday the 13th with her students by doing each subject throughout the day in the theme (13 math problems, 13 minutes of reading,a snack of 13 pretzels).

Debra has been a diehard Cubs fan all her life. Every year she enjoyedtaking a bus trip up to see at least one game in person but would oftenbe found sitting outside in the summer listening to the game on the radio. During her time as a teacher, she would always celebrate opening day with her students. Of course she was absolutely thrilled to see theCubs finally win the World Series in 2016. She also loved Illinois basketball and would enjoy filling out her March Madness bracket every year.

Outside of being a school teacher and watching her favorite sports teams she loved reading, watching game shows and picking spring flowers. She also enjoyed making and putting together presents for those she loved. One of her famous gifts was crocheting handles on the tops of kitchentowels and sending them as holiday gifts or just because. She also puttogether countless care packages for her family members and always enjoyed labeling each item with a fun note.
