SEWARD COUNTY INDEPENDENT Sun. Aug. 27, 2017
In 1865, August Daehling, along with his wife Elisabeth, daughter and brother, Henry, left Germany and immigrated to America looking for an adventure and a better life in a new world to rear their families. They first settled in Clayton Center, Iowa. After two years, in 1867, they left Iowa to go further west. They traveled by prairie schooner, and after many days arrived in Seward County, Nebraska.

August filed a claim on the El/2 of SEl/4 Sec. 32-12-2 (80 acres) on the Lincoln Creek, which is two miles west and one-half mile south of Staplehurst. According to the requirements of the Homestead Act signed in1862, the homesteader had to be the head of the household or at least 21 years old; live on the land (build a home); make improvements and farm for five years. August not only fulfilled those requirements, but hisheirs retain ownership and farm the land today.

The homestead was not only home for August, his wife and seven children, but later became home for his son, Otto Daehling, and his wife and children. Otto’s son, Otto E. Daehling Jr., also lived on this original farmstead with his wife, Frieda. The farm remains in the hands of familystill.

Sometime after the deaths of Otto E. and Frieda Daehling, the originalhouse and outbuildings were taken down making way for more farmable ground.

There were 8 children born to August & Elizabeth into this family, sixof which reached adulthood. They were charter members of the German Lutheran Church at Marysville, which was located about 3 1/2 miles west oftheir home.
