Nicholas Street Birth: 29 Jan 1603 - Taunton, Taunton Deane Borough, Somerset, England Death: 22 Apr 1674 (aged 71) - New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA Burial: Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA Memorial ID: 27725734 of Taunton, England & Taunton, Mass The son of a wealthy land owner in Bridgewater, Somersetshire, England, Nicholas graduated from Oxford College, England, in 1621 at age 18. He arrived to the New World in 1625 and settled in New Haven, Connecticut. Nicholas was a teacher & Pastor of First Church of Christ. [Rev. Nicholas Street was the son of Nicholas Street (1575 - 1617). He was baptized on Jan 29, 1603 in Bridgewater, Somerset, England. He was matriculated at the University of Oxford, Nov. 2, 1621, and is then described as eighteen, and as from Somersetshire. He received the degree of B.A. at Oxford, Feb. 21, 1624/5. It appears that he shipped cattle to New England on the Elizabeth bound from Dartmouth, England in April 1637, it is unclear if he was on the boat as it did carry planters (Coldham, p. 186) About 1638 he was settled at Taunton, MA then part of the Plymouth Colony, as colleague with Rev. William Hooke. He followed Rev. Hooke, a colleague of Rev. John Davenport, to New Haven, where he took the latter's place, Sept. 26, 1659. After Mr. Davenport was called to Boston, Sept. 27, 1667, he had sole charge of the First Church till his own death, April 22, 1674. The will of Benjamin Ling, dated Mar. 25, 1673, leaves a portion of his books to "my worthy friend, Mr. Street, teacher of the church in New Haven." His first wife is perhaps Anne Poole but there are inconsistencies in the available records. His second wife was Mary Newman (-1683), the widow of Francis Newman (-1660). Francis Newman held the roles of Secretary, magistrate and Governor of the New Haven Colony. It was at Francis' brother Robert's barn that the 1639 New Haven Covenant was signed but Robert returned toEngland and lived Stratford, Warwick. Mary Newman married William Leete after Nicholas Street died. The will of Nicholas Street was made April 14, 1674. He bequeathed to his wife the estate she brought him in marriage, the life use of the house once belonging to Mr. Hooke, "the church always declaring their willingness thereunto" to son Samuel, to daughters Susannah Mason, Sarah Heaton, and Abijah Shearman, and to grandchildren Samuel Street and Hannah Andrews. It was witnessed by William Trowbridge and Thomas Tuttle. The inventory, taken May 13, 1674, by Nicholas Auger and Thomas Yale, Sr.,was 457 pds, 16 shillings. Nicholas and his first wife had four children. -GardenGreenGirl (#47937273)] Family links: Parents: Nicholas A Street (1575 - 1617) Susannah Gilbert Street (1584 - 1603) Children: Samuel Street (1635 - 1717)* Sarah Street Heaton (1644 - 1712)* *Calculated relationship Burial: Hillside Cemetery Cheshire New Haven County Connecticut, USA Created by: Jan Franco Record added: Jun 21, 2008 Find A Grave Memorial# 27725734
