Thornton Birth: 11 Aug 1765 - Yorktown, York County, Virginia, USA Death: 1843 (aged 77-78) - DeKalb County, Missouri, USA Burial: Thornton Cemetery, Clarksdale, DeKalb County, Missouri, USA Memorial ID: 12537635 William Thornton I was the son of Mildred Longworth and Luke Thornton. Luke Thornton emigrated from Yorkshire, England to Yorktown, VA in 1760. Luke and Mildred had two children, William I and Betsy.William I served as a private in the 4th Troop 1st. Reg. Light Dragoons Virginia Troops, in the Revolutionary War, commanded by Col. Theodorick Bland. (cert. by Adj. of U.S. War Dept. Wash. D.C. Rec.#306033). Served in siege of Yorktown, VA. William I married Martha Ann "Patsey" Owen on Oct. 31, 1785 in Lunenburg County, VA. She was the daughter of Barnett and Frances (Shookman or Royster) Owen. They had five children: Sarah "Sallie" (Thornton), William, Martha Patsey (Toney), Frances "Frankie" (Barnes) and James. In 1804 the Thornton family moved from North Carolina to Madison CO, KY. In 1816 a number of Thornton, Todd and Adam families moved to Callaway Co, MO and settled near Fulton. In 1840 the clan who hadbeen living in Callaway Co, moved to adjoining farms, making a community of kinfolks. They built homes, a church and a school house. They were Primitive Baptist with the first church called Bethlehem, located on Sec. 35 T 58 R 33 with Elder Jesse Todd as the pastor. Source: Luke Thornton and his Descendents by Larry C.
