John Fooshee Birth: unknown Death: 6 Dec 1844 - Meigs County, Tennessee, USA Burial: Fooshee Cemetery, Ten Mile, Meigs County, Tennessee, USA Memorial ID: 111790875 John Fooshee was born in the 1760s, most likely in Culpeper County or the Northern Neck area of Virginia. He and his wife, Elizabeth, can be found in Person County, North Carolina in the 1790s. About1807, they moved to Roane County, Tennessee, settling on the waters of the Little Emery River. After lands in the Hiwassee District were opened, John moved his family down the Tennessee River and settled at what would become known as the Fooshee Bend area. This land included the Fooshee Peninsula and the Fooshee Island and would be included in Rhea, and then Meigs County. The Fooshees are believedto have been the first white settlers in the Fooshee Bend area. John and Elizabeth had five children. Before 1827, John's wife Elizabeth died as in that year he married his second wife, Martha "Patsy" Durrett Bower. John died 6 December 1844. He was in his seventies at the time of his death. He was buried in the Fooshee family cemetery on an Indian mound in the Tennessee River bottom, opposite ofthe Fooshee Island. One hundred years later in the 1940s, the Watts Bar Dam was built a short distance below the Fooshee Bend area, forming a reservoir that covered both the island and the cemetery mound with water. Before the dam was built, the Tennessee Valley Authority conducted surveys of the area, verifying the existence of the cemetery and the number of graves. Before the area was flooded, two graves were moved, those of John's grandson, John R. Fooshee and his grandson's wife, Susan Hinds Fooshee. The other graves, including John's, were left undisturbed and are now under the waters ofthe reservoir. (Teresa W. Wiese). |
