| John Birdseye Birth: 1616 - Berkshire, England Death: 4 Apr 1690 (aged 73–74) - Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA Burial: Old Congregational Burying Ground, Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA Plot: No tombstone remains Memorial ID: 28425872 The son of JOHN BIRDSEYE (mother unknown), he immigrated from Reading, Berkshire, England to America in 1636, settling first in Wethersfield in the Colony of Conn. where he married (1) PHILIPA SMITH,daughter of REV. HENRY SMITH of Wethersfield, about 1637. The family removed from Wethersfield to Milford and then to Stratford in 1649. He was Deacon of the First Congregation Church of Stratford and had lot # 16. Deacon John was mentioned in the Stratfordtown records in 1650 along with William & John Curtis, Joseph Hawley, Samuel Wells, Richard Booth, John Thompson, William Wilcoxson and his three sons. He was propounded a freeman of Stratford in 1668. "In Pursuit of Paradise" "There is a story that John Birdseye of Milford, a New Haven Colony town, was caught kissing his wife one Sunday in 1649. On Monday the town officials sentenced him to be lashed. Breaking loose from his captors, Birdseye swam the river to Stratford, then thumbed his nose to his pursuers across the river. The Birdseyes stayed in Stratford, where the laws were less restrictive" Connecticut Trilogy states that his wife swam the river after him on the following day. He married (2) Alice Tomlinson, widow of Henry Tomlinson of Stratford. In his will dated Aug. 22, 1689, he names Alice, and his children, JOHN (my ancestor) & Joanna, wife of Timothy Wilcoxson. Regarding picture to the right: The names of JOHN BIRDSEYE & PHILLIPA, his wife, are on a plaque on the Memorial Bridge over the Wepawaug River in Milford placed by the Milford 350th Celebration Committee, July 8, 1989. It says: "IN MEMORY OF THE 18 ORIGINAL SETTLERS OF MILFORD WHOSE NAMES WERE NOT PLACED ON THE MEMORIAL BRIDGE WHEN IT WAS BUILT IN 1889: JOHN BIRDSEYE OBIT 1690, PHILLIPA SMITH HISWIFE". Jeden Tag gaben Mitwirkende aus der ganzen Welt neue Datensätze ein, tausende verwendeten die Website als Bildungs-Nachschlagewerk, lange verlorengegblaubte Verwandte wurdenwiedergefunden und Millionen von Menschenleben bleiben in guter Erinnerung. In welcher anderen Art von Arbeit hätte Jim einer der letzten lebenden Munchkins getroffen, vort einer Versammlung von Grab-Enthusiasten in einem Hollywood-Mausoleum gesprochen und Schätze erworben, wie seinen antiken Sarg-Schraubendreher (nur zum Einschrauben)? |
