Das Geschlecht führt seinen Namen nach dem Ort Seckendorf bei Cadolzburg in Franken und wurde mit Heinrich von Seckendorff am 1. Mai 1254 bzw. mit den Brüdern Arnold, Burkhard und Ludwig von Seckendorff am 16. Oktober 1259[2] erstmals urkundlich erwähnt.
