Surnames: LUTH, VERFURTH
Frederick W. Luth (1851-1915) Kathryn (Verfurth) Luth (1858-1944) Frederick Luth was born in Kletzke, Brandenburg, Germany, on August 29, 1851, and was the son of Heinrich and Dorothea Luth. He had five brothers: William, Henry, Rudolph, Teodore, and John. Frederick came to the U.S. with his parents and his three living brothers on the Anne Delius and arrived in New York on October 27, 1864. The family lived for a time in Elk Grove, Cook County, Illinois, where Frederick's youngest brother, Teodore, died in 1872. Frederick's parents purchased 80 acres of farmland in Tripoli, Bremer County, Iowa, on March 19, 1879. The property was located in northern Bremer County near the Wopsipinicon River. His mother died there on August 23, 1879. Frederick and Kathryn Verfurth were married September 28, 1879, by the justice of the peace. Kathryn Verfurth was the daughter of John Verfurth. She was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on November 23, 1858, and lived with her parents on a farm near Heinrich Luth's in Tripoli, Bremer County. The exact spelling of her first name is uncertain; it has been spelled Katrina, Katherine, Kathryn, and Katherina. She was known to her family as "Kate." On October 20, 1879, Frederick and either his father or brother Henry were both granted citizenship by the County Court of Cook County, Illinois. Frederick's brother William was granted citizenship on October 31, 1879. The 1880 census for Fremont Township, Bremer County, Iowa, shows Frederick Luth living with his wife Kathryn and his father on the family farm. Frederick and Kathryn had four children, all born in Bremer County: John Henry Luth, born August 5, 1880. William Frederick Luth, born October 14, 1882. Gertrude May Luth, born February 7, 1887. George Arthur Luth, born October 31, 1893. Frederick reportedly lost one hand in a farm accident involving a threshing machine. He subsequently designed and built a steel hook prosthesis. Frederick worked as a rural mail carrier, making his rounds in a horse-drawn wagon. He began this occupation on July 16, 1901. Some records indicate that he resigned his position on October 8, 1913. Family legend has it that he was still working as a mail carrier when he died. The story is that while delivering mail, his horses spooked and Frederick was badly injured when he was thrown from the wagon. He lay on the cold wet clay road for several hours until he was found and contracted pneumonia, from which he died on February 26, 1915. Another version of the story is that he was kicked in the head by a horse. He was buried in Harlington Cemetery, located in Section 2 of Washington Township, near Waverly, Iowa. Following Frederick's death, Kathryn moved to Waterloo, Iowa. Eventually she lived with her daughter Gertrude (Luth) Gujer in St. Paul, Minnesota. Kathryn died August 23, 1944, and was buried in Waverly, Iowa, next to Frederick.
