Notes for this person

Filiation incertaine.

CP, IX, 424-425, in a long Note at the end of the Munchensy article, presents evidence that Payn FitzJohn's wife Sybil was not, as is apparently often claimed, the daughter of Hugh de Lacy of Weobley, but insteadthe daughter of Geoffrey Talbot by a sister (possibly named Agnes) of Roger, Hugh, and Walter de Lacy. Keats-Rohan in DD (pp. 538, 919, 1122)continues to make Sybil the daughter of Hugh de Lacy. However, on p. 919, she names Sybil's sister, Cecily, wife of Roger, earl of Glouceter,as Cecily (Talbot)--K-R's parentheses. It seems that she rejects CP'ssuggestion that Sybil is a Talbot daughter, which suggestion is AFAICTbased on the need to account for "the descent to Munchensy of the Honor of Talbot," which evidently wouldn't be accounted for if Sybil was adaughter of Hugh de Lacy. K-R's argument (p. 1122) seems to be that Geoffrey Talbot's "conduct against King Stephen in 1138 led to his forfeiture and the grant of his land to Payn Fitz John and his wife Sybi!
