Ménestrel traducteur de la poésie provençale. En 1218, les biens d'Ulrich II furent partagés: Berthold s'est installé à Neuchâtel et Ulrich III a acquis les terres au-delà de la Thielle: Nidau (Berne), Strassberg(Berne), château en ruine au sud de Büren, Aarberg (Berne), plus tard Valangin.
The fictional marriage of Ulrich to Verena of Nidau, allegedly ca 1222,is an error dating back at least to the early 18th century, that has been repeated many times. It may have started from confusion with a later Verena of Nidau who married Ulrich of Thierstein.
