Notes for this person
NOTE: TFPL, May 2002: Stephen Powys Marks had inherited a tryptic ofthree miniatures, a youngish man in the middle nad an oldercouple surrounding him; I have had the pleasure of seeing these. It is highly likely that the young man was this Marshall son andthe older couple were his parents as on the reverse of hispainting are engraved these words:"INVICTABELLO DEXTRA"J E MarshallAged 24Captain in the Russian Navywho in theEngagement with the Swedes on 10th July 1790having with unparallelled valorfought for 17 hours & receivedmany wounds wrapt himselfup in the Colors of his ship when sinking &perished with her inthe Waves."I have yet to attempt to verify any of this. At all events hisfather says thathis son was already dead when he wrote his willin 1795.Another excellent find by David Armstrong fromt he Times of 19thAug 1790:"In a letter just received from a friend at Petersburg, are thefollowing curious particulars relative to th elast naval fightbetween the Russians and Swedes:--'The carnage in the late engagement between the galley fleets, when the King of Swedes commanded in person, was dreadful.Eight Russian frigates commanded by foreigners, wich came to theassistance of the gallies, are lost. Five English Captains werekilled, and Farquarsn's two daughters were made widows in oneday. Dennison had his head shot off, and Trevanen is dead ofhis wolnds. Poor Perry too; whose life only would make awonderful history, has finished his career; a cannon ball tookhim in the middle, and he leaves a young wife who doted on him.Captain marshall, however, is saved; he shor [?] a Russianofficer who was going to strike, when they had lost 200 out of230 on board the ship and as the vessel was sinking with theremaining thirty, he jumed into the water andhimself and fivemore of them were picked up by other ships alive."Thsimay appear to contradict the triptych but he could havedied later.________________________________________________________
