NOTE: Lord of Cromwell's parliament.Rumoured that his father was the "base son" of Oliver St John,Lord Bletso. - Letter from Elizabeth Mashamto her mother JoanBarrington in 1629 before he married Elizabeth's eldest daughterJoan, by her first marriage to James Altham.In Clayton's history of the Barrington Family, TEAS vol 2, p.27it says "she [Joan] wasmarried to Oliver St John, only son of anatural son of Lord St John's.This match was brought about bythe interference of the Earl of Bedford. St John supported allthe violent measures of Cromwell and his party.He was a fiercerepublican and was Lord Chief justice of the Common Pleas, andLord St John in Cromwell's House of Peers; he dies in obscurityin 1673."In Complete Peerage, Vol IV, p.634, a note says:"Clarendon calls him "a natural son of the house ofBullingbrook" (Hist of the Rebellion, Book III, % 32), but inthe Admission Reg of Lincoln's Inn he is entered as OliverStJohn, son and heir app. of Oliver St John., of Clayhoe,Beds,arm." and there seems no reason to doubt his legitimacy."CP describes his antecedents as:"Oliver St John, of Longthorpe, Northants, andEnfield, Midx,1st son of Oliver St J of Cayshoe, Beds (who was s and hofThomas, 3rd s of Oliver (St JOHN), 1st Baron St John of Bletso,cr. 1559) by Sarah, da. of Edward Buckley, of Odell, in the sameco."___________________________________________________________________Some detailsof him are in memoirs of the Protectorate family ofCromwell, p.15ff. The author there states that he got much fromCollins' baronetage.
