NOTE: Dave Rossiter (owner of the Mitchel one-name mailing list) wrotein December 1988, under the title "Sir Francis Michell ...c.1621":"I have recently come across a note (in a book of heraldry) thatin 1621 Sir Francis Mitchell [sp.] was subject to the "Ceremonyof Degradation" visited on members of the 'Knightly' class as aresult of misdemeanors."Apparently following proven charges of corruption he wasdeclared 'No knight,but an arrant knave', the ceremony includedcutting off his spurs, severing his sword belt & breaking hissword over his head."If he was a Michell relation, then it is hardly likely thatanyone would acknowldedge it...____________________________________________________________________The above may have come from Munday's Middlesex pedigrees wherethere isindeed a Michell family with a Sir Francis Michell ofMidlesex who wasdegraded and as the half-brother of a SamwellMichell of Old Windsor whohad married Anne, da. & heir of IsackRudston of Boughton Monthcensy, Kent and then had two sonsHumfrey and John.
