Much confusion as to his English antecedents is in print. He has oftenbeen considered the Samuel Allen son of George Allen of Weymouth and Sandwich who in his will in 1648 mentioned a son Samuel Allen. This now seems quite improbable as on Jul.10,1656 Henry and Samuel Allen of Boston deeded to George Allen (Jr.) of Sandwich land in Sandwich of our father George Allen, with the consent of our mother Katheren Collins who has rights therein - recorded 1664 in (Plymouth deeds -3-7) (See Mayflower Descendant Vol-25 P.136). Samuel Allen, called then of Boston, signedwith a mark. There is nothing to show that Samuel Allen of Braintree ever resided in Boston after he came to Braintree. A Samuel Allen camefrom Bumpstead Steeple, Co. Essex, England, according to the late Col.Charles Edward Banks. This apparently refers to the Samuel Allen who settled at Windsor, Conn. and not to Samuel Allen of Braintree. SamuelAllen came over in 1630 from Bridgewater, Co. Somerset, according to astatement made without any supporting evidence in John Cary "The Pilgrim".(Cary Gen. 1911 P.63). Unfortunately no reliance can be placed uponsuch an unsupported statement as this without further evidence. Samuel Allen was made a freeman of the Colony May 6,1635, but was this theBraintree or Windsor, Conn. man? He was in Braintree as early as March1639 as shown by the birth record of his daughter Sarah which was recorded with the returns made to the clerk at Boston.(see Register Vol. 3).On Feb.24,1639(40) he received a grant of land here, 28 acres for 7 heads, and Apr.19,1648 he bought a house and 90 acres from John Webb (S.D. 1-90) on the north side of Monatiquot River, bounded E. on Abraham Harding, S. on the river, W. on Thomas Savage, N. on the commons. Allen St., East Braintree now runs through this tract which remained the homestead of the family for many generations.
