Immigrant from Ireland to the United States. On 4th July 1783, he sailed from Londonderry on the brig Providence and united with his uncle Joshua in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1787, James bought a 100-acre trading post which he named 'Stony Batter' after his grandparents' home. He went on to become a prosperous merchant
