Wohl hatte er einen mächtigen Nebenbuhler in Heinrich dem Stolzen aus dem Geschlecht der Welfen, der von seinem Schwiegervater Lothar von Bayern auch Sachsen übernommen hatte. Aber in siegreichem Kampf zerbrach der König die gewaltige Macht Heinrichs und dessen Sohn (auch Heinrich; später der Löwe genannt) verlieh er nurSachsen. Auf Konrad folgte 1152 sein Neffe Friedrich I., der Kaiser Rotbart (oder ital. Barbarossa).</span></p>
