Information found on: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/136353552/johann-leyes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thisis our oldest known Leyes. It may also have been spelled "Layes". This is my father's line that we researched in Germany and found records in the archives. St. Agatha's Church Records have him buried there. My brother and three other cousins are the only ones who have worked this line backward. We took a trip to Germany and these dates are from records found. This couple had three known children: 1.) John Jakob (infant) Leyes, unknown dates & place 2.) Wilhelm "William" Leyes, Sr. #74562201, 1820 – 1908 (Our second great grandfather.) ?3.) John Adam Leyes (possible - #134098933) - need family document, 1825 – 1898 My three cousins and brother will probably kick me for linking these two brothers - William and John - together because there simply are no records.. We need family documents to verify that this is our John who is the brother to our William. I am the only one to conjecture that the brothers traveled to Canada, then to America without their parents. I believe somewhere in an archive in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada lies a document to connect these brothers. I "intuit" that our great, great grandfather went west to South Bend, Indiana around the western side of the Great Lakes. While John went around the eastern side of the Great Lakes (or straight across by boat) and started his family in Ohio. Besides my intuition, John's great grandson moves to South Bend - Joseph Herbert Leyes # 78814166. Did he have Leyes cousins there? Why did he move when the rest of his Leyes family stayed in Dayton? From my brother, Rick Leyes from a letter to our cousin,a historian Lorraine Hinsberger: "I believe that the John Leyes, living with William Leyes, per the 1861 Census is the father of William Leyes, as you have speculated. However, there is currently adiscrepancy in the documentation. My research shows that John Leyes was born on July 14, 1777, most likely in Schmidshausen, Germany. He moved to Canada to be with his son William sometime after his wife’s (Anna Eva (gen. Barbara) Gabriel) death in 1827. Per the St. Agatha records, he died at the age of 89 on Oct. 7, 1862, which would make his birth date about 1773, as you note. At this time, Icannot explain the discrepancy between my research which shows that he was born in 1777 and the death documentation which suggests that he was born in 1773. Again, at this time, I have established a father and son relationship between John Sr. and William, but I have not established any relationship between William and the other John Leyes."
