Sylvia Ellen Hoppes died Wednesday, April 14, 1999 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska at the age of 95. She was the oldest of 15 children born to Alfred H. and Dido Florence (Gilbert) Partridge. She grew up in Burwell, Nebraska and married Alfred Hoppes on April 8th, 1922. In 1942 they moved to South Dakota where she was a telephone operator at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot in Provo. Alfred was a guard. When the facility closed they moved to Chadron where she continued to work as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. Alfred died in 1974. Sylvia moved to Alliance, Nebraska after she retired. Sylvia was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Chadron, South Dakota and a member of St. Matthew's Episcoal Church in Alliance, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter, Christine, sisters Inez Davis, Effie Brenneman and Adelene Scofield, brothers Leonard and Floyd and an infant brother. private graveside memorial service on Monday, April 19th, 1999. Bates-Gould Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
