Notes for this person
Peter Haught I, was born at Rotterdam, Holland, in 1720. He married there about 1747, and sailed from there for America on the Ship Patience, whose captain was Hugh Steele. He landed at Philadelphia on September 9, 1751, with his wife and daughter Elizabeth. In I. Daniel Rupp's list of German accent passengers, there is this record: "September 9, 1751. Ship Patience, captain Hugh Steele, from Rotterdam, las from Cowes. Two hundred fifty-five passengers, eight RomanCatholics." The list of passengers includes the name of PETER HAUT Peter Haught settled near the present town of Moorefield, in what is now Hardy County, West Virginia, at some time prior to 1755. {...} The Fairfax land included most of the South Branch valley. It was in this valley that Peter Haught, and doubtless his three, or more, brothers had settled, at least twenty years before the Revolutionary War. {...} Peter Haught II, son of Peter Haught I, was born in the South Branch valley on July 1, 1755. Peter Haught I, continued his residence in the South Branch valley, sofar as we know, until the time of his death. There is a tradition that he lived during his later years in Pennsylvania, but up to 1790, thetime of the birth of his youngest son, by a second wife, he was a resident of Virginia. The War Department gives us this data from the record of Joseph Haught's service in the War of 1812.
