Notes for this person
Morton was raised with strong Puritan influences in England and attended Oxford (1649-1652). As a result of the English Revolution, he was arrested and excommunicated for promoting progressive education (he was the teacher of Daniel Defoe), forcing his immigration to relative safetyin Massachusetts Bay Colony (1685-1686), although he was soon arrestedfor sedition (and then acquitted) in Boston.
He acted with those who urged the prosecutions for witchcraft at Salem,Massachusetts.
Charles Morton of Massachusetts was inducted as Minister to the first church in Charleston. By 1692 he was a Fellow, and in 1697 elected thefirst Vice-President of Harvard University. He died at Charleston in the following year. The 'Dictionary of American Biography' in reference to the 'System of Physicks' states that 'it was used in many manuscriptcopies as a text-book at Harvard far down into the 18th century'.
