He received a A.B. from Harvard and an L.L.B. from Boston University. He practiced law in Boston, San Diego, CA and in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had one son, Leonard, by his first wife, Sarah Elvira (Curtis). She diedshortly after the birth. He then m. Marietta Dennett Paul had five moresons. He was a California Senator and successfully argued a case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1903, he and his family removed fromEscondido, CA to Honolulu, Hawaii where he practiced law and played animportant role in the formation and eventual success of the Honolulu Gas Co.
