<p><p>Burried in the Downey Cemetery next to the Congrergational Churchwhich is now gone - so the cemetery is in a farm field. The forefathers of the Kuhn and Loeffelbien families were GermanColonists under Frederick the Great of Prussia, in Western Poland.After Napolean's disasterin Moscow, Russia, these families returnedto Germany, and then later migrated to the Black Sea area of SouthRussia.</p></p><p><p>My father's family, The Kuhn's, and my mother's Family, the Loeffelbeins, settled first in the town of Arzis. As the familes grewthey spred out to towns of Sarata, Friedenstal, Beresina and Kulm.</p></p><p><p>From the information at hand, these families left russia, intheyear 1898. From Kulm, Russia, located in the parish of Kulm, Districtof Akkerman, one of the Bessarabian Colonies of South Russia, theytraveld to Hamburg, Germany, and booked passage on the Vessel,"FirstBismarck", to Boston, Massachusetts, on May 19, 1898.</p></p><p><p>An important reference is the book, "The Immigration from Germanyto Russia", in the years 1763 to 1862, by Karl Stumph. Pages347 lists the kuhn families that migrated to the Black Sea area.</p></p><p><p>Prepared by: Ernest N. Kuhn - Son of David Kuhn &amp; Carolina(Loeffelbein) Kuhn</p></p><p><p>Year: 1980</p></p><p><p>In 1900 the census has David 30, Karlina 29, Otilia 10, and Atolina 3,living in Fletcher Precinct, which is the family farm. It shows thatDavid and Karlina have been maried for 11 years and own the farm freeand clear. Karlina has had 4 children with 2 still living.</p></p><p><p>1910 Paha Precinct, Adams County has David 41, Carolina 40, Atlina 14,Paulina 8, and Ernnie 1 living on the family farm. It shows thatCarolina speaks German but the rest of the family speaks English. Inthis census Carolina has had four children with 4 still living, theyhave been married for 20 years.</p></p><p><p>The 1920 Census shows David 50, Carolina 50, Paulina 18, and Ernest 10on the farm near Ralston, Washington. It shows that the home is ownedand that it is free of any mortgage. Otilia had married and then diedin1914. Adelina "Kuhn" Shumacker 21, is married and living next doorwith husband August 28, and daughter Edna 2 1/2.
