<p>[starke.ged]</p><p> </p><p>Charles was AWOL from the German army and hid aboard the ship that his family was taking to America. The ship was searched, but he went undetected, asthe Captain washelping him. Charles helped pay for his family's voyage. They landed in New York October, 1866. He must have gone to Milwaukee almost immediately, at age 12, for his obituary states that he lived in Milwaukee for 64 years.</p><p>The 1880 Milwaukee census has the family living at 33 Seventh Street, Milwaukee, which is next door to Louise's family.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Charles was naturalized in 1882; petition for naturalization (#1907) on file at Historical Society, Milwaukee. Witnessed by Otto Lehfeldt and Louis Ahlswede.</p><p> </p><p>Charles died in his home at 2816 Mt. Vernon,Milwaukee. (Document at Milwaukee Court House, vol 575, pg 72)</p><p> </p><p>He is buried in Arlington Park Cemetery, Milwaukee.</p><p> </p><p>(Caroline Bratz to Mary Jo Stroh)</p><p> </p>His obituary said that he had been an employee of the Great Lakes Dredge Co in Milwaukee for nearly 50 years, and had lived in Milwaukee for 64 years.
