<p> </p><p>Hermann From was the fourth child of Johannes Sorensen and Emma Bertha From (nee Kielau). He was born on Sunday, November 2nd, 1902 in Kellinghusen, Germany and christened in Kellinghusen on Tuesday, May 5th, 1903.</p><p>His godparents were: 1. Carl Dargel.</p><p>2. Christine Dargel.</p><p>3. Anna From, all from Kellinghusen.</p><p>Hermann From immigrated to Canada with his parents, brother Otto and sister Bertha aboard the S.S. Bulgaria from Hamburg, Germany on May 15th, 1903 and arrived in Halifax, N.S., Canada on May 27th, 1903.</p><p>In early childhood, he resided with hisparents in Hespeler, Bracebridge, Penetanguishene in Ontario and Fox Valley, Saskatchewan.</p><p>He married Catherine Isobel McIntyre on November 9th, 1929 in Vancouver, B.C.</p><p>As a young man, Hermann and his brother Otto (Robert Randall) left the Fox Valley to find work. They eventually went to work for the "Conklin Show", a midway that travelled all over the country. When the Conklin Shows made the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto its permanent home, Otto and Hermann moved to B.C. where Otto settled in Robert's Creek, B.C. and Hermann went to Vancouver and spent many yearswith various carnivals.</p><p>Herman never changed his name legally, but while working on the carnivals he</p><p>would call himself Herbert Swanson. He worked in the Conklin Shows. Royal</p><p>Canadian Shows and other midways. He resided in Vancouver and Surrey, B.C.</p><p>while working with the carnivals and midways.</p><p>Hermann continued on with assorted carnivals for over 50 years. All otherjobs</p><p>were of short duration while waiting for the carnival season to start. The only</p><p>exception was during World War II when he worked as a crane operator in the</p><p>coke plant for the B.C. Electric Co. in Vancouver, B.C.</p><p>Hermann finally retired in 1975 at the age of 73 and died on July 10, 1991 from</p><p>cancer of the upper bowel while in the Penticton Regional Hospital at the age</p><p>of 89 years. According to his son, Garfield, his ashes were spread across the</p><p>valley.</p><p>Hermann and Catherine had 2 sons - Herbert and Garfield (Gary).</p><p>All during Hermann'slife he was referred to as Herb or Herbert but his birth</p><p>certificate shows the name to be Hermann.</p><p>For information only: Kreiss Steinberg on his birth certificate refers to the</p>Stone Castle or Stone Fort district of Kellinghusen, Germany.
