Notes for this person
Schimke, Pauline (d. 11-21-1978; b. 7-27-1897; TS; OC; dc) “Pauline Schimke. Died: 11-21-1978. Birth: 7-27-1897, SD. Spouse: Never Married. Father: John Schimke; Mother: Helena Leischner. Buried: Odessa Cemetery, Odessa, WA.” (Lincoln County Health death card) “Pauline Schimke was born in Parkston, SD July 27, 1897 to John D Schimke and Helena Leischner Schimke. In 1901 she with her parents and family came to this state by train, settling on a farm 4 ½ miles northwest of Odessa. She was confirmed in the former Pilgrim Congregational Church of Odessa and has been a member of the United Congregational Church of Odessa since its inception. The family moved to town in 1920. Following her elementary school education, she felt her greatest need was at home. It was her desire to help her widowed mother who was left with a large family of small children. She was devoted to her family, taking responsibilities with unusual maturity for a young girl of 17 years of age, and nobly filling the role of second mother in her family, being the third older of eleven children. She never hesitated to make personal sacrifices. Because of her burning desire to be of service to others, shewent to summer school to qualify for entrance into St Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in Spokane. She graduated in 1925. Her first position, after graduating, was with the Shrine Orthopedic Hospitalfor Crippled Children, located in Spokane. This was followed by ten years as superintendent of the Wallace Hospital in Wallace, Idaho. Off and on, she had been on the Odessa Memorial Hospital Staff.Since 1960, she made her home with her sister Ruth Weber at Odessa. Here, for nine years, Pauline helped take care of her ill brother-in-law, Marcus Weber. Since 1957 she had been troubled with heart disease, which progressively limited her activities. On Nov 11 she entered the Odessa Memorial Hospital where she died suddenly Tuesday, Nov 21, (1978). Pauline was a member of the Ladies Aid of theUCC, The Pairables, a member of the choir for years, the Odessa Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Odessa Grange. Her parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death. She is survived by five sisters and one brother: Emma Geisler of Arlee, MT; Leo Schimke of Sequim, WA; Mrs Ruth Weber of Odessa; Mrs Edna Hyatt of Tacoma; Esther (Mrs Reed Hansen) of Tacoma; and Johanna (Mrs Edward Sandvig) of Ferndale, WA; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov 25 at 2 p.m. from the United Congregational Church, with the Rev Albert Hausauer officiating. Sacred selections, ‘He Calls Me Child’ and ‘The Way That He Loves’ were sung by Peggy Salo with Delores Cook as organist. Casket bearers were William Wenz, David Jasman, Eugene Frieske, Lawrence Quast, Reuben Scheller and Ab Davies. Concluding services and vault interment was at the Odessa Cemetery with Strate Funeral Home of Davenport in charge.” (Odessa Record: 11-30-1978)
