It gives themmany of the same favorable</p><p>rights and privileges, including free land, financial</p><p>assistance, freedom of religion and freedom from</p><p>military service. 1812The Germans under Bluecher</p><p>defeat Napoleon I’s army at a battle on the Katzbach</p><p>River in Schlesien. This great victory wouldinspire</p><p>the name for the future village of Katzbach in</p><p>Bessarabia. 1814 – 1842German colonists establish 25</p><p>villages in Bessarabia, mostly in the interior</p><p>black-soiled Budshak region. 1821Katzbach is founded</p><p>by twenty-eight familiesin Poland who decide to</p><p>follow their friends and relatives to Bessarabia, and</p><p>become the first settlers in Katzbach. One part of</p><p>these original settlers had emigrated from Prussia to</p><p>Poland, and another portion had emigrated (1800-1804)</p><p>from Wuerttemberg to Poland. In total, the village is</p><p>established eventually (see further indications below)</p><p>by 396 settlers (205 makes and 191 females) from</p><p>Prussia, Poland, Wuerttemberg, Baden and Schlesien. Of</p><p>these 83 families, 65 receive land. The entire land</p><p>area of the community consisted of 3,892Dessjatines</p><p>(10,508 acres)of land, forming a slanted diamond</p><p>shape. Katzbachbelongs to the Arzis Parish. 1822Eight</p><p>families come to Katzbach from the Bessarabian-German</p><p>colonies of Wittenberg and Kulm. 1822-1824A total</p><p>harvest failure occurs. 1823-1829 Swarms of</p><p>grasshoppers and field mice do great damage to crops.</p><p>1825A small, narrow prayer and school house is</p><p>completed. Nineteen Evangelical-Lutheran families move</p><p>to Katzbach from the Catholic colony of Krasna, due to</p><p>religious tensions there. 1827Village residents endure</p><p>much, as they are required to provide billeting,</p><p>supplies and extra horse teams to units of Russian</p><p>solders marching through the area to the war in</p><p>Turkey. Katzbach has 56 families, totalling 117 men</p><p>and 102 women. 1828The “plague” breaks out in the</p><p>village, killing about 30 people. Three families died</p><p>out completely and their houses and furnishes are</p><p>burned to fight the disease. Beetles</p><p>appeararound blossom time and cause great damage to</p><p>fruit production. 1841A total crop failure occurs.</p><p>1842 Twenty-two families leave Katzbach, many of them</p><p>to the CaucasusMountains region.1843 A hailstorm</p><p>nearly obliterates a promising harvest. 1845A cattle</p><p>pest (“murrain”) strikes the village, killing</p><p>two-thirds of the cattle. 1846A total harvest failure</p><p>occurs. 1847Swarms of grasshoppers and field mice do</p><p>great damage. A poor harvest occurs. 1855-1856</p><p>Residents have to put up with much from the Russian</p><p>military, which is on the march to Turkey. It</p><p>cost the congregation 10,000 rubles. 1898A mill is</p><p>built acrossfrom the village granary.1899A total</p><p>harvest failure occurs. 1903A teacher’s house for two</p><p>families is finished. 1904A large canal is dug through</p><p>the village to replace the naturalAliaga Creek, which</p><p>is filled in. Total harvest failure occurs. 1907A</p><p>Walker organ, costing 1750 rubles, is bought for the</p><p>village church. 1914A total harvest failure occurs.</p><p>1918March – Romanian troops occupy Bessarabia. The</p><p>province, including Katzbach, becomes part of Romania.</p><p>1920A grocery store, north of the colony’s mill, is</p><p>founded by village members. 1921Fruit trees are</p><p>planted by the village church. 1923 A little wooded</p><p>area in the village is dug up but not replanted. A</p><p>decorate village chancellory is built to replace the</p><p>first one, constructed in about 1835. 1924Total</p><p>harvest failure occurs. 1928Total harvest failure</p><p>occurs. 1929Katzbach’s population reaches 1,125 (537</p><p>males and 588 females). Most residents are farmers,</p><p>but there are other skilled workers: 6 blacksmiths, 4</p><p>tailors and seamstresses, 11 carpenters and wagon</p><p>makers, 12 cobblers, 2 harness makers (tanners).</p><p>1940Katzbach’s 1,290 residents (641 males and 649</p><p>females) leave their village for resettlement to</p><p>Germany, under an agreement between Hitler and Stalin</p><p>that sees all Bessarbian-German colonies vacated and</p><p>resettled by Russians.
