Notes for this person

Jens Petersen From was born on November 13th, 1798, the son of cottager Peter Jensen and his wife Anne Cathrine Christiansdatter.

He married Anne Jesdatter Sorensen on August 8th, 1825 and they had a daughter, Anna Catharina Jensdatter From.

He died on June 15th, 1830 in the parish of Hejls, Denmark.

According to a letter from Claus J. Lildholdt, Archivist in Denmark, the inclusion of the name "FROM" by Jens Petersen was done when the authorities legislated several laws to force citizens of Denmark to fix their family surnames.
It was common to take the original name - i.e. Jensen, Hansen or Petersen. It was also very common to take name after the place one lived or from his trade. Also peoples nicknames were used, and here the name From probably comesin - From meaning "Pious".
