Karen (Lobe) Olson

Appeared: 2005-07-06

Karen (Lobe) Olson died on Thursday, June 30, 2005, after a long illness. Karen was born on November 8, 1941 in Olympia to Alvin and Tillie Lobe, the first of their three children. A lifetime resident of Olympia, Karen graduated from Olympia High School in 1960. Karen worked as a secretary for the State of Washington, then for Dr. Stiggelbout, and finally for Dr. Cliff Scarff, sharing a part-time office position with her sister, Pam. In 1964, Karen married Jim Carlson. They had one daughter, Cheri. They divorced in 1970. In 1974, Karen married Arden Olson, and they started their life together at Arden's bachelor pad on Eld Inlet. In 1977 they had a second daughter, Kristi. Karen loved the outdoors. She loved clam digging, hiking, and watching the animals. Whenever she saw an interesting animal, she thought first of showing her children. Karen once caught a bat in the house in the middle of thenight and threw it in the dryer. When her husband asked what she was doing, she said, "Well, we can't let it go. We have to show the girls!" Karen and Arden were a great team. They shared the responsibilities of raising their children and taking care of their home equally. Each had their own talents that complemented one another. Karen never complained about hard work. Her children often witnessed her cleaning gutters, weed-eating, and mowing lawns, picking up snakes and tossing them into the bushes as she went so as not to hurt them. Her hardworking disposition and matter-of-factness complemented her love of her husband, her children, and her family. Karen will be remembered for her kindness to animals, her love of her family, and her devotion to her hometown and church. Karen is survived by her sister, Pam, her brother, Rodney, her husband, Arden, her two daughters, Cheri and Kristi, and her grandson, Zachariah. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Tillie, various aunts and uncles, and her nephew, Chad. A funeral is scheduled for Thursday, July 7, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 21st and Franklin, Olympia. In lieu of flowers, donations can bemade to the Alzheimer's Association of Washington, Puget Sound Home Care and Hospice, and/or the Trinity Lutheran Church. Special thanks are extended to Tamara's Adult Family Home for their care and compassion.
