Notes for this person

George Gottlieb Struckmann is my first cousin four times removed.

George immigrated to the USA in 1850 with his parents and siblings. He was 15 years old.

He served in the Union Army during the Civil War enlisting as a private in the 4th Missouri Calvary in September 1861 at 26 years of age. He was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1863 after the battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas. He was mustered out on October 25, 1864 in St louis. He served under General Franz Siegel, veteran of the German Rebellion of 1848 and later a hero to the German Americansfighting to save the Union.

After the Civil War George returned to farming in Hanover Township. The 1870 census shows him farming with a family (wife and two young children) inHanover. He was 34. Two (possibly four) of the children of George's first cousin Henry Struckman were also recorded in his household. The Henry Struckmann family were recent immigrants. These two children were Sophia-22 and young Henry-12 and possibly Charles-21 and Fred-19..

In 1880 George was still farming in Hanover township but in about 1886 he sold his farm and moved toa house he bought in Bartlett and became a full time politician.

George was elected or appointed to several offices of Hanover Township including Constable, Justice of the Peace, School Trustee and Assessor starting in 1866.

He was elected to four terms In the Illinois House and became a leader of the Republican Party in Cook County. He also was elected to the Cook County Board for 11 years and served as President of that body for one term.

He and Christiana were married by a Justice of the Peace in Kane County on August 23, 1866.

He was one of the founders and the first Village President of Bartlett in 1891. The home he bought in 1886 and lived in until his death in 1920 still stands at 400 W. Oneida Av. in Bartlett. A street in Bartlett---STRUCKMAN BOULEVARD---was named in his honor.

The entire family except son William are buried in the Bartlett cemetery located nearthe old downtown of Bartlett at the west end of North Avenue near the golf course (this North Avenue not to be confused with route 64).

The Bartlett village hall contains a museum of Bartlett history containing memorbilia from the George Struckman family. The village of Bartlett has expanded and now overlaps into Dupage and Kane counties. It presently has a population of about 40,000 people.

GEORGE STRUCKMANN'S FARM-----1870

GEORGE IS MY FIRST COUSIN FOUR TIMES REMOVED. HE WAS BORN IN SCHAUMBURG-LIPPE IN 1835 AND IMMIGRATED TO THE UNITED STATES IN 1850 WITH HIS PARENTS AND SIBLINGS. BY 1870 HE WAS A PROMINENT CITIZEN IN NORTH EASTERN ILLINOIS AND ACTIVE IN LOCAL AND ILLINOIS POLITICS. IN 1870 HE OWNED A LARGE FARM IN HANOVER TOWNSHIP IN NORTHWEST COOK COUNTY WORTH OVER $14,OOO.

THERE WERE AT LEAST TWO HOMES ON THIS FARM IN 1870. GEORGE IS LISTED AS THE HEAD OF ONE OF THE HOUSEHOLDS AND HIS FATHER GOTTLIEB IS LISTED AS THE HEAD OF THE OTHER. IN ADDITION TO THESE TWO FAMILIES, I BELIEVE GEORGE'S FIRST COUSIN---CARL HEINRICH (HENRY) STRUCKMANN AND HIS ENTIRE FAMILY ARE LIVING IN THESE TWO HOUSEHOLDS. CARL HEINRICH---AND I WILL CALL HIM HENRY--- IS MY SECOND GREAT GRANDFATHER.

HENRY AND MOST OF HIS FAMILY---ALL EXCEPT CARL WILHELM---ARRIVED INTHE USA AT THE PORT OF BALTIMORE ON JUNE 3, 1870. CARL WILHELM (CHARLES) IMMIGRATED IN 1867. ON AUGUST 24, 1870 ALL WERE RECORDED IN THE CENSUS ON GEORGE'S FARM. I BELIEVE THE GIVEN NAMES AND AGES OFCHARLES AND HIS BROTHER FRED WERE ALTERED POSSIBLY AS A PRECAUTION AGAINST ANY SEARCH BY AGENTS OF THE KAISER'S ARMY. THEY WERE LISTED AS JOHN AND JOSEPH STRUCKMANN, AGES 24 AND 22 , RESPECTIVELY. THEIR ACTUAL AGES WERE 21 AND 19. I COULD BE MISTAKEN BUT THIS IS MY THEORY ON THIS LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY. THE TWO MEN COULD NOT BE FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE 1870 CENSUS.

GEORGE'S FARM IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTHERN HALF OF SECTION 11 AND THE NORTH QUARTER OF SECTION 14. SECTION 14 IS DIRECTLY SOUTH OF SECTION 11. THE PROPERTY BORDERS ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE EAST BRANCH OF POPLAR CREEK. A SECTION IS USUALLY ONE SQUARE MILE. IT LOOKS LIKE THE FARM WAS LOCATED IN WHAT IS NOW POPLAR CREEK FOREST PRESERVE EXACTLY FOUR MILES EAST OF THE BORDER WITH ELGIN TOWNSHIP. IT LOOKS LIKETHE DIVIDING LINE BETWEEN SECTION 11 ON THE NORTH AND SECTION 14 ON THE SOUTH MAY BE THE PRESENT DAY ROUTE 58 (GOLF ROAD).

I ACCESSED THE 1870 CENSUS ON ANCESTRY.COM. THE SURNAME STRUCKMANN WAS MISSPELLED IN THE INDEX TO THE CENSUS. IN GOTTLIEB'S HOUSEHOLD IT WAS SPELLED STRUCHMEN AND IN GEORGE'S HOUSEHOLD IT WAS SPELLED CTRUCKMEN. THE ACTUAL HANDWRITTEN CENSUS LOOKS LIKESTRUCKMAN TO ME. I WAS LUCKY TO FIND THEM BUT ONCE I FOUND GOTTLIEB'S LISTING GEORGE'S LISTING WAS RECORDED NEXT. THERE WERE ABOUT 1,100 PEOPLE RECORDED IN THE 1870 CENSUS FOR HANOVER TOWNSHIP.

I ACCESSED THE 1870 PROPERTY OWNERSHIP PLAT FOR HANOVER TOWNSHIP AT THE POPLAR CREEK PUBLIC LIBRARY IN STREAMWWOOD.
