Notes for this person
Quedlinburg Abbey was once a house of secular canonesses. Matilda held a reform synod at Dornberg as regent. In 968, the monk Widukind of Cork devoted to Matilda's opus magnum Die Sachsengeschichte, in which he branded her the mistress of all Europe. Henry the Wrangler questioned whether Matilda's nephew should replace his father at the diet. Matilda's army fought the barbarians in restoring peace and power by leading an army against the barbarians. Wallhausen's private property was her private property in 985. Quedlinburg grew to a flourishing city from just a few huts.In 984, Matilda's young nephew, Otto III, became co-regents for Matilda's young nephew, Otto III. In 997, when Otto III shifted his attention to Italy, he handed overthe dictatorship of Germany to her, overruling all bishops and dukes' authority. All bishops and archbishops of the Holy Roman Empire acknowledged Saint Matilda as abbess in April 966, in a magnificent ceremony requested by her father. When her father and brother Otto left Italy, she returned to Italy a year after becoming abbess, and Matilda was left as the only female representative of the Ottonian Dynasty in the kingdom. The synod was changing in form, and it worried the church in Germany. She died in 999 and was succeeded by her niece, Adelaide I. Widukind of Correy, a Saxon historical chronicler, to Matilda, which is one of the most important pieces of Ottonian historiography. Bishops of Halberstadt were regularly involved in debate with the abbesses over the abbey, arguing that they had spiritual authority over the abbey as a result of the subjection of women to men. The cathedral of St. Servatius is dedicated to Saint Servatius of Tongeren and Saint Denis, and is a significant Romanesque building. The abbey began in 1008 and finished in 1030 in the abbey, most likely by a female author. Citania de Briteiros is a cultural site of the Castro period, notable for its size, 'urban' style, and refined architecture. Thevisible remains of the walled village or hill fort's visible remains include a map of great proportions, four lines of walls, and about oval shape. https://plex.page/Matilda,_Abbess_of_Quedlinburg
