Die Geschichte der Windmühle Upgant reicht bis ins Jahr 1569 zurück, als unter Graf Edzard II. in dem später "Mühlenloog“ genannten Ortsteil eine Bockwindmühle errichtet wurde. Diese war aber nicht Abbos Mühle.
1790 kaufte Abbo die Mühle zu Marienhafe von seinem Schwager Rudolph Harms; 1792 verkaufte er sie wiederum an Claes Janshen, den bisherigen Pächter der Mühle zu Groothusen. Anscheinend zog Abbo anschließend, wohl noch vor der französichen Besatzung Ostfrieslands, von Upgant-Schott nach Greetsiel.
