Er studierte an der Münchner Kunstakademie, bevor er 1852 gezwungenermaßen den väterlichen Gasthof übernehmen mußte und den Pinsel aus der Hand legte. Das Selbstporträt zeugt von der hohen künstlerischen Qualität dieses Malers, die leider durch seine Tätigkeit als Gastwirt in nur wenigen Gemälden Ausdruck gefunden hat.
