Jurgen Petersen
Jurgen Heinrich Petersen was born November 23, 1902, the son of Peter W. and Hulda Brockman Petersen. He died at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, Wednesday, May 17, 2000 at the age of ninety-seven.
Jurgen was born in Hanover Township, Crawford County and was baptized in Christ on January 25, 1903 in Hanover Township by Pastor Runge. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 24, 1918 by Pastor Firnhaber in Schleswig, Iowa.
After receiving his education, he joined his parents and brothers, starting the Peter W. Petersen and Sons' farming operation, known as the Sunny Slope Stock Farm. He enjoyed farming until his retirement in March 1968, when he moved with his mother and brother Henry to Schleswig.
Jurgen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig, Iowa. He was a loving brother and uncle. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and spending time with his family. Jurgen entered the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison on November 13, 1986, where he enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, and looking out of his window at the squirrels, and watching the trains.
Jurgen was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, C. Henry, March 25, 1997 and Bernhard, February 28, 1956; one sister, Elsie Carstensen, March 23, 2000; one brother-in-law, Friedrich Carstensen, December 20, 1998; one niece, Elaine Schroeder, March 5, 1942; and one great-niece, Sandra Ramer, April 16, 1991. Survivors include one brother, Emil Petersen and his wife, Lillie of Schleswig; one sister-in-law, Leila Zage of Schleswig, Iowa; nieces, nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; four great-great-nieces; three great-great-nephews; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2000 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, 'How Great Thou Art', 'I'm But A Stranger Here' and 'I Know That My Redeemer Lives'. Those serving as pallbearers were Daniel Schroeder, Wayne Schroeder, Patrick Hanrahan, Jens Carstensen, Darryl Petersen, Dean Schroeder, Chad Petersen, Ralph Neumann, Don Hanrahan, Jay Petersen, Alan Nemitz, Tim Stoppel, Dave Nemitz and Bruce Kelly. Arrangements were made by the Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid.
