Notes for this person
-
Settled in Shelby, IN and then Johnson co., IN.
-
Note from WFT 8:3133. "Tandy Brockman, a Virginian, came to Johnson
County, Indiana in 1823, building his cabin on the knoll where the Brockman Cem-
etery is now located. He buried his son Richard here in 1824. The Jolity Church
was organized here in 1828. The Cemetery is a dedicated tract, supported by the
interest on an endowment plus donations, controlled by a board. Tandy Brockman,
son of Samuel and Nancy Durrett Brockman, was a native of Virginia and grew to
manhood in Kentucky, having been taken to the latter state when but four years old.
He married Martha Shipp and moved to Shelby County, Indiana, settling in the woods
and for some time lived the life of a rugged pioneer. Mrs. Brockman died at the age
of sixty four. Tandy died at the age of seventy two in Edinburg, Indiana. He is buried
there. Tandy was a Methodist, Protestant, temperance, Whig. In clearing ground he
injured his leg severely and later developed blood poisoning. He was taken to the
then nearest hospital at Madison in Jefferson County, Indiana, where the leg was
amputated. He used an artificial leg or peg and returned home to clear land for
school. He was supposed to help with founding the Jollity M.P. church. Also started
the Brockman graveyard which is still in use and cared for today. Charles Smith,
son of Caroline Brockman, says that shortly after coming to Indiana the two young
sons of Tandy and Martha Brockman died of something like malaria or one of the
fevers so prevalent in those days. The elder Brockman then set aside a portion of
land to be used as a cemetery."
- Information from the sign at the Brockman Cemetery gives the following information:
"BROCKMAN CEMETERY --- 1824 --- Tandy Brockman, a Virginian, came here in
1823 building his cabin on this knoll and burying his small son Richard here in 1824,
started this burial ground. The Jollity Church was organized here in 1828. This is a
dedicated tract, supported by the interest on an endowment plus donations, control-
led by a board. Many names of neighborhood families are represented here, among
them the Pruitts, descendants of Moses and Elizabeth Hawkins Pruitt. Markers
from the Pruitt cemetery were brought here in 1972."
- Many of the birth and death dates for members of this family, children and grand-
children have been found through photographs of tombstones located in the
Brockman Cemetery (founded in 1824) near Edinburgh, Johnson co., IN...these
photographs were taken by Jeanne Kersh in 2003 (4700 Westwood
Lane, Manvel, TX 77578-2839).
