Krebs, 84, died November 7 at his home in Henrietta after a month-long illness. Mr. Krebs was born March 13, 1924, in Elyria, to the late William and Marcella (Simon) Krebs. After graduating from Elyria HS in 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy and served for six years.Sonarman Krebs served from 1942 - 1945 on the USS Harding (DD-625/DMS-28) and from 1945 - 1948 on the Douglas H. Fox (DD-779), achieving the rank of First Class Petty Officer. He was a USS Harding Plank Owner (commissioned and decommissioned the ship), which participated in D-Day by defending the Army Rangers at Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach, and was involved in battles in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific during WWII. On September 27, 2008, he returned to Normandy, France, to help dedicate a new, bronze monument at Utah Beach to the US sailors who died on June 6, 1944.<br />After working for 30 years for the Lorain Telephone Company, he retired as a supervisor in 1986. He was an active member, elder and Sunday School superintendent of the Henrietta United Church of Christ; past member and officer of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association; lifetime member of the Tin Can Sailors and OH AMVETS Post 22; current member of the Surface Navy Association and the Naval Order of the United States; Past Master of the former Henrietta Grange #1053 and Past Master of Gibson Lodge #301 (1964 and 1994); Past High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons; former District Education Officer ofthe 16th District of the Grand Lodge; member of the Toledo Body of the Scottish Rite; Past Patron of the former Wakeman OES 460; and a member of the former Farm Bureau Council 4G.<br />He married Laura Mae Brown of Henrietta on July 1, 1950; she survives. Also surviving is a son, David E. Krebs of Cambridge, Massachusetts; two daughters, Kathy (David) I. Bruns of Angola, Indiana, and Lois (HarryAnderson) K.
