He was born on August 18, 1917, to the late Hallie James and Pearl Talbot Newton, and spent his youth, with his older brother, Earl, and many cousins, in and around the Portsmouth, Virginia area. He served his country in the Pacific Theater in World War II as a Corporal in the 77th Reconnaissance Division. Jim was a decorated member of the Liberty Division of the Army, which was commended by Major General Andrew D. Bruce for its self discipline, the ability to do a job, and for having the inherent courtesy of the tough guy in combat. He was proud to have belonged to such a heroic band of men, and throughout his long life he behaved in an honorable and patriotic manner. In 1945 he settled in Richland, Washington and, with his wife, Eleanor ("Betty") Newton, raised their family. Jim worked until his retirement as a Senior Manager in the Security Division of the Atomic Energy Commission. He loved spending time with his family, was a voracious reader and believed strongly in giving back to his community through service. In his affiliation with the Lion's Club, and St. Peters Hospital in Olympia, Washington he provided assistance to many people in the area over the years. He was a man of honor, integrity and strength, and kept his trademark sense of humor until the very end of his long life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Betty; and their children, Hallie James Newton, III, and Sherry Newton Lalonde; and grandchildren; great grandchildren and nephew, Scott, Carrie, Jocie and Maddie Newton; Angie, Steve, Jake and Reese Ticknor; Ben and Nicole Denniston; and Chris, Karen, Lorin and Elena Wagner. He is preceded in death by his brother Earl; and daughter, Marcia Newton Denniston. He was a very special man, and will be sorely missed. Memorial services for the family will be held in Richland, Washington.
