Notes for this person
John David Schaaf came to the US in 1853. He came from a small Village named Schaffenburg near Baden Baden in Germany. He sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on his way to land in New York. He was Nineteen years old when he came to this country. John's first job was working in a Cracker Factory in New York and it is unclear how long he lived there. Sometime later, he moved to Plymouth, Indiana, where his sister was living. It was there that he met and married Caroline Kramer. They had two sons, Daniel and Fred. When Caroline died, he married Anna Mary Marie Carress, of Ohio. They had five children, three boys, William, George and charles and two girls, Sarah and Hattie. They moved to Wisconsin, traveling by covered wagon, before the year 1889. They homesteaded in Cameron, Wisconsin, where they lived in a log home. They lost everything in a house fire the first night that they lived there. A neighboring family, the Charles Poorman's, took them in, letting them live with them until their new log home was built. This home is still standing and was still being lived in, in the year 2000. The Schaafs lived there many years, even after their children were grown, married and moved on.
