FernMarian Grauer, 95, of Spearfish, and formerly of Marcus, Iowa, passedaway Friday, March 20, 2015, at her residence. Funeral services wereheld at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Peace LutheranChurch in Marcus. Pastor Don Meyer officiated. Burial took place atTrinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Marcus. Visitation began one hourprior to the service. The Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Marcusis assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may besent to the family at www.greenwoodfuneral.com. FernMarian Grauer was born on Oct. 26, 1919, in LeMars, Iowa, to HenryDorr, Jr., and Kathryn (Doerr) Dorr. She was baptized into theLutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Marcus. She attendedrural school at Simpson Bethel, completed an additional year ofconfirmation classes, and graduated from Marcus High School in 1938. Fern and her high school sweetheart, Wendell D. Grauer, were unitedin marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sept. 22, 1940. They workedtogether at the bowling alley, owned by Wendell’s father untilWendell was able to establish his own radio and TV business whereFern helped manage the business. They eventually built a house inMarcus, but after retirement moved to the Henry Dorr family home nextdoor. Fernwas a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus and was a chartermember of the Ladies Aid. She volunteered many hours in churchactivities and teaching Sunday School. Her strong faith guided her inall things. She was active in many community organizations includingTourist Club, Noname Club, Bridge Club, Hobby Club, and BirthdayClub. She loved gardening, camping, fishing, golfing, swimming,anything outdoors. She canned, cooked, sewed, and painted. Fernwas happy and cheery and displayed the brightest smile. She waskind, and caring to everyone, never saying a negative comment aboutanyone. Family was a cornerstone of her life. She was a wonderfulwife and mother of two children. She loved traveling to Florida tovisit her son’s family. She was a caregiver for her mother-in-law,father, mother, and husband during their final days. Wendell passedin 1996, and in 1998, Fern and her dog, Mac, moved to the Black Hillsof South Dakota to live with her daughter and son-in-law and theirdogs for 18 years. The blended family hiked and camped and fished andtraveled. They had a great life. Inthe final years of her life, she attended Western Resources Adult DayCare where she enjoyed meeting friends and was the favorite ofeveryone. Her smile captured everyone’s heart and she was GrandmaFern to all who knew her. Eventually at 95, she tired of illness andpassed away at home under Hospice Care. Fern will lovingly beremembered by her son, Barry (Nancy) Grauer of Waynesville, N.C., anddaughter Pamela Grauer (Lial Kofoed) of Spearfish; grandchildren,Doug (Dahlia) Grauer and their son Joshua, and Deana Grauer Parkerand her husband Dwaine Parker and their children Dillan and Daelyn;she is also survived by other relatives and friends. ©2016 Black Hills Pioneer.
