Aus Find A Grave: Alan Ray Musselman GEBURT Nov 1947 Baltimore City, Maryland, USA TOD 23 Aug 2014 (im Alter von 66) Perry County, Pennsylvania, USA BESTATTUNG Unknown GEDENKSTÄTTEN-ID 134975901 Alan Musselman, age 66, passed peacefully to another realm on August 23rd [2014] with the support and love of family and friends. Born in Baltimore November 1947, he was raised with freedom to roam the countryside of My Lady's Manor, Monkton, Maryland where he was infused with a deep love of countryside which became his lifelong passion and vocation. After earning a Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a Masters degree from the University of Northern Colorado, he held the following positions: Planning Director for the Washington County Planning Commission in Hagerstown, Maryland; Executive Director, Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation; Director, Lancaster County Agricultural Preservation Board; Executive Director, Lancaster Farmland Trust; and finally Land and Community Consultant specializing in farmland and historic preservation, land use, and watershed preservation. Mr. Musselman's very significant contribution during the above career was as founder of farmland preservation for the state of Maryland, and co-founder of Lancaster Farmland Trust, movements which have since spread nationwide. Just last May he received the Leadership and Vision Award for establishing farmland preservation in the United States. This was presented by his peers at "Saving America's Farms and Farmland-Celebrating 40 Years of Farmland Preservation." In 2001 he and his wife moved to Meadowhawk Farm in Millerstown, Pennsylvania where he continued this activity with an organic fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower operation. For the past five years Mr. Musselman's love of tennis led to his position as tennis coach at Juniata High School [Mifflintown, PA] where he became a significant mentor and role model, culminating in the team's trip to States in 2013. The players returned his affection for them, and the entire team alumni honored him with a farewell celebration at his home only a week before his death. His further interests were travel, reading, music, hiking, and great love of dancing and playing basketball. Mr. Musselman was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Beverly Sibley Musselman of Columbia, South Carolina. He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years Susan M. Musselman, Millerstown, Pennsylvania; his brother Craig Newton Musselman and sister-in-law Sharon of Rye, New Hampshire; son, Kevin Joseph Musselman and daughter-in-law Sarah of Oakland, Maryland; daughter Erin Musselman and son-in-law John D. Hoffman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; step-son Michael T. Ernst and stepdaughter-in-law Joyce of Lebanon, Pennsylvania; and eight grandchildren: George, Anabelle, and Norah Musselman; Kai and Dexter Hoffman; and Todd, Benjamin and Samuel Ernst. Newport, PA - Obituary =============================== Lancasteronline, August 28, 2014, Article by Joe Hainthaler "Friends remember a leader in Lancaster County farmland preservation." Pennsylvania has lost a pioneer in farmland preservation and a top conservationist. And that pioneer, Alan Musselman, who died peacefully early Saturday at his Perry County home at age 66, was a key figure in the Lancaster County farmland preservation program that leads the nation in acres preserved. Musselman died six weeks after being diagnosed with cancer at his home at the base of Tuscarora Mountain in Perry County. Those who knew and worked with Musselman described him as a man with the knowledge and experience to get Lancaster County’s farmland preservation started, an understanding of local farmers’ commitment to agriculture, and an approach that mixed humor and passion to help others understand the importance of preserving farmland. “He was aggressive about ag preservation when it wasn’t cool at the time,” former Lancaster County Commissioner Terry Kauffman said Wednesday. Gene Garber, chairman of the Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board, agrees. Back when the program started, Garber said, the idea of restricting one’s property rights was no easy sell in Lancaster County. Amos Funk, considered the grandfather of farmland preservation in the county, recruited Musselman, then executive director Maryland’s first-in-the-nation farmland preservation effort, as the first director of the county’s ag preserve board. And he did a good job, according to many of those familiar with Musselman and his work. “He was probably one of the greatest conservationists that Lancaster has ever had and he will be sorely missed,” said Michael Domin, principal planner for the Lancaster County Planning Commission, who knew Musselman for 30 years both personally and professionally and considered him a friend and mentor. One testament: Lancaster County leads the nation with 100,871 acres preserved through a combination of county funds and private contributions - an achievement Tom Daniels, Musselman’s successor as the board’s top staff official, credits to Musselman’s leadership of both the ag preserve board and the Lancaster Farmland Trust. Daniels, an East Hempfield Township resident and professor of city and regional planning a the University of Pennsylvania, said Musselman “brought to the county a lot of experience and wisdom,” an ability to calmly and effectively make the case for farmland preservation. Musselman’s influence extended beyond farmland preservation. “He was a positive force in the way we were thinking about land use more broadly,” said Gene Aleci, a local architect, planner and urban design specialist. Aleci served with Musselman on the board of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County in the late 1990s, when Musselman established the organization’s easement program, a way to preserve historic preservation through the federal tax code. ====================== A Memorial Service for Alan R. Musselman, who passed away August 23, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 538 West Chestnut Street, Lancaster at 1 PM with a reception to immediately follow.
