Joe was born the youngest son to Mabel and Daniel Schaaf on the 19th of July in 1910. He was the fourth son, just as his father was the fourth son.Joe grew up on a little farm in Spooner, Wis. He attended and graduated from Wisconsin State Teachers College. While in college, he met his lifelong love, Elizabeth, and they were married on the 28th of July in 1935. They were married 60 years when Lib (as Joe fondly called her) passed away in Fall Creek.Lib and Joe spent their married years in the Midwest, beginning in St. Paul, moving to Clarinda and Iowa City, and finally retiring back to Fall Creek, (nine miles from where they started). They had four sons, William “Bill” of Omaha, Neb., James “Jim,” deceased, Robert “Bob” of Iowa City, Iowa, and Joseph “JD” of Sierra Vista, Ariz.While in Fall Creek, Joe worked on many projects, the biggest of which was the Log Cabin for the Historical Society. He was always willing to help a neighbor.During WW II, he tried several times to enlist in the service, but was unable to do so for medical reasons. He was extremely proud that all four of his sons served in the Armed Forces.After Lib passed away, Joe moved to Sierra Vista to live with his youngest son and daughter-in-law. When he first arrived, he spent countless hours playing cards before his eyes got so bad he could no longer see.His immortally resides in his sons, Bill (Jeanne), Jim (Pat), Bob (Sheri), JD (Sue); his ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and his many friends.Cremains will be interred in Fall Creek, Wis., at a later date.Stokes & Mundt Funeral Chapel & Crematory will be assisting the family with local arrangements.
