RUTH ALICE (SHEFFIELD) SMITH Ankeny Ruth Alice (Sheffield) Smith, 88, of Ankeny, died December 20, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, of a sudden illness. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 27, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, with burial following at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. Ruth was born July 12, 1920 in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was the daughter of James and Pearl Buehner Sheffield, and the youngest of seven children, and graduated high school from the Grand Island public school system. Ruth married Lavern Smith April 5, 1941, in Lincoln Nebraska. Before retiring, Ruth worked for the Ankeny community school system, as a cook. During retirement, Ruth and Lavern traveled extensively in their motor home, covering many US states and Canada. Ruth was a beautiful seamstress, and enjoyed crafts, traveling, and her family. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lavern; her children, Jolene (Linden) Hartman of Tipton, IA, Kenneth (Carol) Smith of Longmont, CO, Verl Smith, of Ankeny, and Curt (Nancy) Smith of Ankeny; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings. A visitation will be held 9:30 to 11 a.m., December 27, 2008, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church.
